we take our old motorola’s like the v550, v551, v540, v600’s etc to a UNLOCK Cell place in town. They take it back to their unlocker software and plug in the imei number off the back near the battery and the carrier (ours was cingular) and they hook up a cable, and it sends an unlock code to the phone. Which unlocks it to use with other carrier’s sim cards.

I think you can buy the cable and the code from places online as well, like ebay etc. Or you can send it into places that advertise online, to unlock and send back to you. I have unlocked Nokia’s using the free code generator’s online, but I’ve never been able to do motorola’s without the cables.

Or you can just stick a dead sim card from the original carrier back into the phone, and use it. It will boot up and say No Service but you will be able to do everything but make phone calls and send messages.
